I am reading it and loving it. A real treasure as much for the images as the words. One of those books that will become a pleasure to own and keep. The grandchildren will even get a peek when I am finished.

I am quite sure that Jean-Luc was going where no 'one' has gone before. Captain James T Kirk was going where no man had gone before.

Star Trek comparisons are dangerous ground considering the amount of 'Trekkies' in the world. Anyone seen Galaxy Quest?

fossil-fish's Avatar Jump to comment 5 by fossil-fish

I think that was bullshit, but I have to be clear that I only think that it was bullshit. I really did not understand one single word of it even though I am born, raised and lived half a century in Northern Ireland where we might have a bit of an insight into the differences between the catholic and protestant faiths. Goobledegook to me.

That was a fantastic article. So many parallels with our own little society here in Northern Ireland. I grew up in a country were it was more important to pay a man to drive round play parks on a Saturday night chaining up swings than it was to spend money making those same places feel safe and welcoming for families.

I have had to pass it on to a Scottish friend saying 'Good for Scotland'. Although, just like here, there are many places in Scotland where you cannot catch a fish on Sunday. Not sure why that upsets god so much.

I know as atheists we probably shouldn't admit it, but did anyone think that the interviewers own claim of religious belifs added weight to his argument, perhaps in this case. Passion certainly wasn't lacking, you really knew that he believed in what he was saying.

I can not imagine why atheists would want to be involved in any way with it. Like most religious broadcasting it looks ridiculous. More time spent running about making sure that people who all disagree fervently and venomously with each other get an equal say. And smile patronisingly while they do it. You really want share of that, no thanks.

What absolute nonsense. Faith Groups? Sure each group believes fervently that all the other groups are wrong. Great start. I think the answer, in your own life, is to ignore or defy all these attempts while these groups run round in circles trying to accomadate each other. How to hell are they going to do that?

That whole lecture was superb, but that last image of the earth really grabs you.

Was interested in her comments on 'Longtitude'. That really was a great book. It was dramatised here a few years back where the story from the book was interwoven with the story of a second world war officer, who was going through a personal and emotional break down, and was charged with the restoration of the clocks. Great TV and definitely a great starting point for the real Hollywood science.
