Let's make a deal, inspired by this article, people: If any of us survive a natural disaster and are interviewed - proclaim loudly "Jesus Christ! God's just tried to kill me!"

Disregarding the news item - In my opinion and in my experience, I've yet to see techniques of putting up signs and counter signs do anything other than make the person who did it feel good (along with people who already agree with them) This counts as much for us athiests as it does for full on bible bashers. The only convincing I've ever done has been drawn out over a long time, and has been non aggressive, and is based on reason. Mockery NEVER works, despite how trendy it is to think so (you only have to look at the news report to see that anyone can try mockery). "Having said that" (Curb, anyone?) Please visit my skeptics blog, that only ever mocks! - William Satire Jr

I think people are hard wired for superstition, and religion is just the daddy of superstition. I remember as a kid being convinced if I went to sleep facing one wall, I'd have nightmares, but not if I went to sleep facing the other wall. That was a minor superstition completely and utterly thought up without any outside influence. Critical thinking takes constant effort. I think it's an uphill struggle. Some are better at it than others. Genetics? Maybe...

@Azven: I thought that a good well thought out question. It's something I've always wanted to know of fantatics willing to kill - that is how do you justify killing children when if they were not killed they may have grown up to share your beliefs - I don't think the point is that they may become bombers too, I think the Anchor means that he is deciding their fate before they've decided it for themselves, and that surely that must be wrong even within the context of religion and holy war. I would have thought that from a religious point of view, killing someone at any time in their life takes away the possibility that they have converted to your beliefs. To get a bit philisophical - what is the point of a god giving us a free will and a life to lead (as all Abrahamic religions believe), if a human bomber can take it away before the full potential ath has unraveled. Surely they are missing the point of the whole free will/life to lead exercise. I don't think I'm explaining myself very well - it's been a long day!!

Glacian @ 23: "people will simply become too smart to be religious anymore"

I'm not convinced. Regression to the mean and all that - the chances are that two above average intelligent parent's kids will be more towards normal intelligence. Even more depressing, despite being a tautology, even if you have average intelligence, half the world is more stupid than you.

Is there any evidence that smarts are being naturally selected?!

Of course there is a schism. There's a schism in everything... Thus my Ponty Mython post the other day...

"Twitsworth: Are you the Athiest's People's Front?
Richard: F*ck off!
Twitsworth: What?
Richard: Athiest's People's Front. We're the People's Front of Athiesm! *outraged* Aithiest's People's Front... Cawk.

(except from the "The Life of Richard" (1977) by Ponty Mython)"

Evolutionary speaking (or Mevolutionary speaking) most people save their worst bile for their closest relatives (Liverpool/Manchester - England/Ireland - UK/France) I don't think athiests will be / are any different...
