Re comment 19 nick keighley If you deliberately want to miss the point I was succinctly making you would comment as you have. However, nations which is a way of describing different areas of the world where people live, They, the people, in those nations have evolved differently in all ways, including biologically and culturally, to people in other nations. As to whether Italy is more evolved than Nepal would need a discussion all of it's own.

Unfortunately human evolution is not uniform throughout the world and suppressed or slow to evolve nations, including those restricted by a dictator and or religion, are very vunerable to the false comfort that the hocus pocus placebo drug of religion provides for them.

Being a non-believer does not mean you cannot have imagination and hope of anything, hope is not belief. It is so painfully obvious to me that early humans needing relief from fears and anxieties of the unknown, and not finding much naturally, turned to hocus pocus make believe from their imagination, turning voices and hearsay into beliefs for help. This has occured in different parts of the world and has been honed over the years, passed on, translated, reinterpreted and adjusted to suit. Due to scientific knowledge (including Darwin's evolution) that has occured relatively recently in the history of human evolution, we no longer need to rely on hocus pocus beliefs to comfort us, although some people still do in varying degrees, depending on their evolved intellect, which is understandable and acceptable to a point. That point in terms of human evolution is now approaching where it is no longer acceptable in the relatively peaceful, civilised free world to put up with the hocus pocus belief pushers. Pushers who mix their false beliefs with their job or try and affect others due to their public voice. This is coming to a subdued end thanks to the efforts of many, including of course Richard Dawkins. However, we must never forget that for most of us fears and anxieties of the unknown have been allayed by scientific knowledge which should never arrogantly be ignored, as it is this which is continuing to weaken the view and voice of the staunch hocus pocus believers. Death is probably the last bastion of the hocus pocus believers and in such times as this who would prevent anyone who finds comfort from it? Certainly not me or Richard Dawkins, don't mock the afflicted addicted, but instead find ways to help. There has to be a certain respect for the help that organised hocus pocus beliefs have given to many since their invention. However, they do need to be laid to rest, kept for private individuals who have not yet evolved sufficiently to live without them. Here's to a secular world and to Richard Dawkins, a gentleman who should be welcome anywhere, but who unfortunately is not, in the slow to evolve hocus pocus belief ridden parts of our not so free world, who resist knowledge because of their beliefs that have served them and past generations, allaying their fears and anxieties.

richard jr miles's Avatar Jump to comment 133 by richard jr miles

Islamic prejudice to others will not always be tolerated. Peaceful, civilised, moderate Muslims living in our free world must make their religion one of peace for all. Because if they do not, peace will never spread to other parts of the Islamic world, which are not free. If Islam and Muslims cannot evolve peacefully due to their restrictive medieval ways then they will become stifeled, isolated and disliked, which of course is already starting to occur.

Richard, I think a good answer re the soul is the effect of the human self-conscious inability in trying to understand the unconscious autonomic part that is responsible for 24/7 function. I like the way you did not get sucked into the philosophical categorization meta-bollocks.

Re comment 181 Steve Zara Steve, it seems that you have a different view of the Quran to me, which instructs muslims to only put up with the infidel as long as they have to. This I put to you has been the case over past centuries in the west. It is all very well to say that all muslims do not think like that, but you cannot rely on the peaceful meek not to be swept along by the aggressive muslims. It is certainly the case for these helpless women. We see little protest from the meek muslims because of the Quran, who just like the meek germans who were swept along by Hitler's fans were powerless through fear to prevent the slaughtering of Jews, even though perhaps they did not agree with it. Utter rubbish....think again. Islam is only a religion of peace if you are a muslim and even then there are no guarantees. Show me a muslim country that puts up with the infidel and it will be because they need the infidels to come to their country with money to spend and/or useful knowledge/trade.

Science and knowledge is slowly but surely weeding out Gods and religion. What is referred to as the soul by some is conscious awareness, inability to understand what is going on in human beings and other creatures. Hence the past need to make up beliefs to relieve the desperate uncertainty. Today we are lucky to have more and more knowledge to dispel this need. Death is the last hiding place for God, so the religious cling onto their beliefs.
