Where is "truth in advertising" when it comes to politics? I thought Australia was bad with pollies getting free kicks, but this is ridiculous.

And what about the slander against atheists Mrs. Hagan?

The hell with the both of them I say. Elizabeth Dole is worse, But Hagan plays along with her by protesting "I'm A Christian!" and not bothering to address the demonization of atheists.

A right-wing Christian conservative caught lying?
Wow, this must be a first!

Maybe she should be taking the money test: tell a Godly $1 bill from a Godless $1 bill ten times, or you're not a Christian (ok maybe you are, but God isn't real, take your pick).

The GOP once again shows that it excels in gutter politics.

But more remarkably, you can actually attack someone by calling her an atheist in U.S. politics.

The U.S. is probably the only country where "intellectual" is a slur and "spreading the wealth" is almost treason. Scary.

So it turns out that the Republican candidate is an atheist.
Would you dare misuse god if you believed in it?

It must sting being an atheist in North Carolina right about now.

P.S. I hope she still delivers the blood of christian virgins that Hagan promised for that atheist money. We totally need that!

No, we all don't value the role of faith in American life. Sheesh, panderer.

Being a godless American would mean you would be in the company of Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan, Dr. James Watson, Samuel Clemens "Mark Twain", and the best scientific minds in America.

But of course, that would mean you would no longer be with Joe the plumber. And he is after all everything that America stands for.

This is outrageous. The ad is meant to at least tie Hagan to an atheist group, and likely imply that she is an atheist. Why is that okay' Let's assume that the ad is only trying to tie Hagan to an atheist group. What if Dole ran an attack ad alleging that she has ties to a Muslim group' Muslims would be furious and people would be disgusted.

Hagan was quick to disassociate herself from atheism and praise faith in god. What would she have said if she was associated with a Muslim group' She would have spewed some platitude about understanding the differences between our religions. No understanding for atheists, though.

Maybe we have to start whining like the religous folks do when people insult their beliefs.

As a NC atheist, I'm kinda torn on this one.

On the one hand, I despise Libby Dole and all she stands for. Do you know that she got more oil money than almost any sen in office? As soon as she launched her first ad against Hagan, I knew Hagan would be getting my vote.

On the other hand, I'm incredibly insulted by the whole affair, by the insinuation that "atheist" is the dirtiest thing someone could ever be called.
Of course, what do I expect? She could rape puppies and still get more votes in America thanby defending atheism... But her response leads me to believe she's not just being political, she really does think 'atheist' is the dirtiest thing to be called.

Still, she did attend that meeting that started the whole hubbub, so maybe there's more hope than I think.
But rest assured, as soon as she wins, I'll be writing her office.

This is so unabashedly offensive that it's practically comical. I might as well overdub myself with Elizabeth Dole's lips moving saying "I'm Elizabeth Dole and I love kiddie porn". I mean seriously. There was a Family Guy episode where something similar happened, and that was a joke.

Elizabeth Dole is the worst kind of slime, I hope this sinks her campaign. It's no surprise that being Atheist is worse than being just about anything else except maybe a murderer in the eyes of North Carolina voters. I've been there. There's more churches than there are people.

why not write her office before the election?
Candidates should be made very aware that there's a considerable voter base of non-theists, who are willing to vote for the better candidate, without caring for statements of faith.
If she or her office answers to polite questions from atheists, expressing full respect for their rights of citizenship, unbelievers should know this in light of this ad affair. If there's a public conference or q&a coming up, this question could and should be brought up.

black wolf,
A fair question, but I kinda feel like my opinion wouldn't be heard amidst the last minute rundown to the election. I may be naive in thinking it will be heard even afterwards, when she's settling in to her new Washington office, but I feel like I might at least have a better chance.

You ain't $&*%ing kidding. It never ceases to amaze me what a backwards world I live in here in a First World country. I would very much like to stand up and speak out, but my wife owns a small business. There are three churches within a stone's throw from her studio. Three! Her clientele is almost exclusively upper middle class white soccer moms. To admit the truth--that we're atheist--would mean financial doom for our family. In fact, I'm getting nervous just posting this with my real last name on here... =T

Demonstrates, if nothing else, the filth that is U.S. politics. As long as either of these twats have the ability to hide behind religion, as if it is unassailable, we might as well go back to 1693 in Salem and start hanging heretics.

I believe Sam Harris has tried to blend atheism with spirituality. Should we hang him? You know? That seems a bit heretical to this dogmatic atheist.

Such a shame that atheism is seen as such a "dirty idea" that it can be used as an attack in such a way.

This is a good example of what I was talking about yesterday; we cannot afford to become complacent. We need to work to change the perception of atheism.

"What do we do with bitches ?"

"Burn them !!"

Too bad Hagan did not stand up for the rights of atheists to participate in a democracy, either as voters or candidates. I was once warned about N. Carolina, when there was a possibility I would be asked to move there for a job. I was told the first thing I would be asked when I moved into my new house would be "What church do you go to ?"

Of course, now I have an answer - Seven Day Adventurist.

Laurie, the English language has a purpose, to be used by Hitch to skewer opponents. If it weren't for Hitch, then English would be superfluous, we could all communicate well enough in German, French or Swahili. Without Hitch, why English?

Sorry Quetz, I figured that if I sped up I could bypass the boring bits and move on to the interesting bits. Seems I misunderstood relativity. I sped up, time slowed down. If I slow down, will time speed up? Counter-intuitive hey? Go slow so that things go fast.

Reminds me of the old Latin proverb:
Festina, lente! (Make haste, slowly!)
