Atheist billboard defaced on N.C.'s Billy Graham Parkway

Unknown vandals unhappy about atheists' billboard in Charlotte, N.C., spray-painted "Under God" on the ad, the city's atheist association discovered Monday. The defaced message will remain in place until after July 4, the group reports, which is the soonest that workers can furnish a fresh billboard image. Here's how the vandalized billboard now looks:

NC Secular Association Sponsors "Godless" Billboard in Charlotte & Other NC Cities

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The newest billboard near the intersection of Boyer Street and the Billy Graham Parkway is getting a lot of attention. The North Carolina Secular Association is sponsoring the message that depicts an American flag with the words "One nation, indivisible.” Noticeably missing: the words "under God."

William Warren of Charlotte Atheists and Agnostics says it's designed to raise awareness. "A lot of people just assume because you live in Charlotte, North Carolina that you're a southern Baptist and the city is so much more than that,” he says.

The sign depicts the Pledge of Allegiance as it was originally written in the 1890s. It wasn't until the 1950s when the "under God" phrase was added under President Eisenhower. "It actually divided the nation. It made it wrong to not believe in God,” says Warren.

"I would suspect that most people are paying it no attention,” says conservative pastor Joe Chambers. He says the billboard is blasphemous, although he appreciates people's right to free speech. "God is sovereign, He does rule this universe and He did create it. You can spit in His face, but you need to get ready for the results,” says Chambers.

'Under God' missing from billboard on Billy Graham Parkway

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A billboard in Charlotte is one of six across North Carolina that omits the phrase "under God" when quoting the Pledge of Allegiance.

The billboards, sponsored by the North Carolina Secular Association, have the phrase "One Nation Indivisible" written over an American flag background.

The billboards were posted in a celebration of Independence Day, according to a news release.

"This is a positive message of unity and inclusion for all Americans," said Joseph McDaniel Stewart, vice president of FreeThoughtAction and founder of the North Carolina Secular Association. "It is designed to bring nontheists and theists together as patriots in a shared society."

The billboards cost a total of $15,000 and will be displayed for four weeks in Charlotte, Asheville, Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington and Winston-Salem.

"Godless" Billboard to go up in Asheville

A series of billboards set to go up across the state have some people upset. The billboards are sponsored by the North Carolina Secular Society, who wanted them up just in time for the July 4th holiday. The group wants a positive message that will encourage Americans to be more accepting of "free thought."

Godless billboard stirs controversy, sparks debate

In 1954, the words "under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance. With Fourth of July just around the corner, some groups are using billboards across the state, including one here in New Hanover County, to help get those two words removed from the pledge for good. ... Continue reading

Billboard campaign rebuts 'one nation under God'

Religious billboards adorn the highways across the South. But a new billboard campaign in North Carolina deliberately snubs the Almighty.

A coalition of atheists and secular humanists has placed a billboard on Billy Graham Parkway in Charlotte that displays an American flag with a few key words from the Pledge of Allegiance: “One Nation Indivisible.”

Notice anything missing? The phrase “under God,” which appears between "One nation" and "indivisible" in the Pledge, is absent on the billboard.

William Warren, a member of the North Carolina Secular Association, says his group put the ads up on billboards across the state to let people know that patriotism and belief in God are not always synonymous.

The billboards are appearing in a half-dozen locations across the state, including Asheville, Winston-Salem and Raleigh, in addition to Charlotte.

'Under God' missing from NC secularist billboards(AP)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- High above the Billy Graham Parkway in Charlotte, a North Carolina group is making a claim on patriotism without piety.

The North Carolina Secular Association has paid for a series of billboards which will go up in the weeks before the Fourth of July. The billboards, which cost $15,000, show an American flag and the words "One Nation, Indivisible." They omit the words "under God," which have been part of the Pledge of Allegiance since 1954.

'We're Americans too': Atheist billboards stir debate in Lakeland

LAKELAND - New billboards in Lakeland are attracting attention. The group Atheists of Florida placed the five signs in the city Wednesday as a way to target the area's devout Christian population.

"There's quite a strong representation of religion out here and we feel that this is really where the message should be," said Atheists of Florida president John Kieffer.
