I've been waiting for anti-religious music, and then this came. I don't want atheism to be associated with horribly bad music. Tough luck, I guess.

Josh, you're a great musician, can't you contribute with some heathen music?

If anyone is interested, Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker interviewed Markella on Freethought Radio. Here's a link to the podcast:

It's definitely better than Greydon Square, but I'm not sure the search for an "atheist anthem" is quite over yet.

I am not really a fan of heavy metal music either. I much prefer slower and more soothing music, like the song "It's Only Natural" (about evolution) composed by Dan Barker and Susan Hofer:

Hmm, .. talking of (sort of) music which has an anti god/atheist touch merit to it, I would recommend a song by the erstwhile prog-rockers Camel - a track called 'Never Let Go', from the early 70's.

Crazy preachers of our doom
Telling us there is no room.
Not enough for all mankind
And the seas of time are running dry.
Don't they know it's a lie...

Man is born with the will to survive,
He'll not take no for an answer.
He will get by, somehow he'll try,
He won't take no, never let go, no...

I hear them talk about Kingdom Come,
I hear them discuss Armageddon...
They say the hour is getting late,
But I can still hear someone say,
That is not the way...

Anyhoo - here's a link too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbqaKyVEFjU

Josh/Anyone: perhaps start a proper thread for 'Music without Belief'?

Dance/techno isn't really my genre but it's good that the message is being carried in a lot of different ways. I thought the images were powerful.

My favorite anti-religion song is still "Judith" by A Perfect Circle:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PVNfQZFT6g

You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
Fuck your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why

Not like you killed someone
It's Not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ
As if he knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
Did it all for you
He did it all for you..

sbooder Crass

That was a blast from the past, last time I heard that was 1983. I think. I really didn't like then, friends, non religious ones I might add, were outraged.

Now, well it still disturbs.

Still, maybe it is good to disturb the comfortable.

In that song Christ is a metaphor for everything I dislike about the church.

Apparently the devil doesn't have all the best tunes after all.

For an atheist anthem free of bombast, and which you can actually enjoy as music, try The Vaselines:

I admire the sentiment, but the music is f***in' awful. It reminds me too much of various religious attempts to get down with the kids, maaan...

Don't get me wrong, I love *good* dance music (I'm a DJ) but give me "Imagine" over this, any day!

(with a nod to to Not The Nine O'Clock News)!

Is it me, or does this sound like something played backwards...

Good effort though.

The "music" is hardly going to be a chart buster, and the lyrics don't suit the it; I'd have produced it with just images and text; silence can be very powerful.
